Blog Posting 11- Holes
Holes by
Louis Sachar tells the story of Stanley Yelnats and how a misunderstanding sees
him placed into a juvenile detention centre. This is no ordinary detention centre;
Stanley (and the rest of the boys) must dig a hole a day in a dried up lake (five
feet in depth and width). The Warden
believes that making these young boys dig holes in the raging heat of the day,
getting blisters is character building. Stanley
makes friends with a young boy he names Zero. He teaches him to read and their relationship
builds as the story continues. Stanley
digs up a chest one day. The Warden has been looking for this chest and the
treasure since the lake dried up. This chest reveals the truth about the Warden
and the chest belongs to Stanley’s great grandfather. The Warden is taken to
jail for making all these boys dig holes and they are all released.
This book
would be a great class reader in a primary/middle class as it follows the basic
narrative structure and the teacher can create a number of activities throughout.
The teacher could discuss the way the author has used language features to
describe the characters.
